PROOF

Fifteen years ago, I moved to Moscow, Idaho with little or no idea of what I wanted to do with my life. I was a poor college student who used science and the outdoors as a motivation to reach many of my dreams. Since then, I have achieved both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Idaho, traveled and recreated extensively around the world and wintered over twice at the geographic South Pole as a Scientist.

My most recent ambition, that I’m calling “Proof”, involves a 1,700-mile bicycle ride north to Haines Junction, Alaska, climbing Mt. Logan, elevation 19,850 feet, possibly skiing down the mountain and then returning home, a 1,600-mile journey by way of the Inside Passage in a sea kayak. All this in a mere 100 days, weather permitting. This idea, like many of my others, is simply another personal challenge, which I believe is attainable, with the help of many local friends. Hopefully it will be “Proof” that you don’t need lots of money, sponsors or experience to achieve your dreams.

This trip will begin Saturday April 3rd.  Stay tuned for updates.

Editor’s Note:
Lance is a man of few words when it comes to his achievements, but I’ll list a few of them for him, courtesy of Trevor Fulton, friend and University of Idaho Outdoor Program Assistant Coordinator.

While at the U of I, he served as an instructor and trip leader at the University’s excellent Outdoor Program. Some of his outdoor adventures, many of them with the Outdoor Program, include:

  • In 2006, he teamed up with some ex-Outdoor Program staff to raft the Alsek River. They portaged Turnback Canyon, lugging all their gear across the glacier on their backs, a most arduous task.
  • Climbed Mt. Logan in 1997.
  • Climbed and summited Mt. Aconcagua, in Argentina, in 2002.
  • Climbed and summited Mt. Denali, in Alaska, in 2005.
  • Climbed and summited Australia’s highest peak, Mt. Kosciuszko, in 2009.
  • Has climbed New Zealand’s Mt. Aspiring three times and has yet to summit.

As soon as we hear more from Lance, we’ll pass it along to you in an issue of the e-News.
