Proven around the world, Carlisle's tough, maintenance-free, quality aluminum shafts give you maximum strength and performance. The 1-7/8" diameter thick-walled tempered aluminum tubing is sheathed in colorful, abrasion-resistant polyethylene tubing. 8' and longer oars have reinforced inner shafts for extra-duty strength. Rubber grips cushion the molded plastic handles. Removable blades permit easy storage and transport.

Comments about Carlisle Raft Oar Shaft:

The oars were fine but a couple of issues at purchase and on transport bear mentioning. We received the oars and separately purchased Oar Rights only to find that sleeves for the oars were not included (not sure whether this was a shipping error). Separately after removing the blades from the shaft for transport 600 miles to the Main Salmon river from Seattle we discovered at Corn Creek that the aluminum sleeve inside the oar shaft had moved such that the alignment hole for the blade to lock in would not take the "button" on the blade. This proved to be a non-trivial riverside fix. Once on the water the oars performed admirably.

          Plastic skin can shift

Comments about Carlisle Raft Oar Shaft:

These are a solid economy shaft. First time we assembled ours on a hot driveway, the plastic outer skin got warm and expanded relative to the aluminum core, which created some problems. We used a knife to enlarge the hole where the blade button pops through, and also cut off the excess that was now extending beyond the end. The oar still works fine, but still not a great feature. I prefer other oar brands but the price on these is nice and they still work.

Comments about Carlisle Raft Oar Shaft:

I have used Carlisle oars for 30 years and the two I've broken happened after a flip on the Grand Canyon in 2001. I replaced them at Phantom Ranch when I ordered replacements and had them brought in by mules...had to get break down replacements in order to get them down the trail!

                  Q:

I currently own a Clackacraft 16' Lp driftboat. The carlisle oars I have on this boat are 7'long (shaft). Will that work for a 13 foot NRS otter with fishing frame?

                  thanks,

                    A:

David, the 13' Otter will take a 60"W fishing frame. As you know, oar length is somewhat personal preference. We recommend 8'-9' oars for a 60" frame. Depending on where you're measuring that 7' shaft length the oars may be over 9'. But give them a try; you may find they work fine. One thing you can do if they seem a bit heavy is to add counterweights, Item # 1390.

                    Grizz,
Both Carlisle and Cataract specify a shaft outside diameter of 1-7/8". My
Carlisle shafts measure 1-7/8" (actually 10 mils less at 1.865"). Cataract
counter weights don't specify an inside diameter.
If Cataract shafts indeed measure 1-7/8" and their weights fit their shafts,
they should also fit Carlisle shafts just fine.
                    Cheers,
                    Bill
