It mounts outward. Very sturdy, happy with the product. In use for 3 years now, no problems at all with it. Sent from my iPhone

They mount outward. Think about how the oar sits in the oarlock once the oarlock stand is mounted.

The oarlock stand mounts out. Slanted outward toward the water. It makes it nice and wide for rowing and better balance on the oars. James

I mounted it outward, which certainly works. I never considered inward, which I think would put the oarlock at an awkward angle.

I am wondering why you ask? Look at the angle of the socket. If you mount it inward, it will angle the wrong way. Inward and there will be a big loss in leverage as the oar locks will move close to your hands. Something must have prompted the question. Did you have an unusual idea in mind?

Outward! And set your ours (with stoppers so they are no closer than about three thumb widths apart at the closest point when they are both 90 degrees and horizontal.
