Decided to finaly get one of these based on the conclusion that a multiple day paddle trip could be potentialy disastrous if a paddle gets swept away in some serious river current, or goes somewhere you can't follow.
Tried it out on a 30 mile 2-day paddle, and it worked great. Stays out of the way due to the coil, and retracts to a nice and short length. Comes with an awesome pouch with a carabiner so you can just throw that right onto your yak cordage for when you're not using the leash.
I put the leash onto my yak, but it has a great wrist strap that works really well too.
If you worry about getting tangled in a roll or fall-out, the leash could easily be cut through with a knife.

We never paddle without attaching a paddle leash to our paddles. The leash is a small price to pay to protect a large investment we make in our paddles. The only thing we would improve is to make the paddle leash a little longer as it is a little tight for one of our kayaks.

I didn't use a paddle leash for a long time, until a wave knocked me over and I lost my paddle and had to get towed to shore. After that I knew I needed one just in case. On the first day I just went for an easy ride at the lake, but I tested it by throwing my paddle in the air and doing a few rolls while purposly letting go of my paddle. It works great, easy to attach, recoils perfect and it looks cool. Its been dragged on rocks/pavement and I've managed to tangle it a few times and it still holds its original structure. I can tell its gonna last hella long!

I like to use a leash for solo paddling and occasions when I do not carry a spare paddle. As long as you are aware of possible entanglement issues and how to respond to them, I see no problem using this helpful device.

Excellent product! I don't even notice it being there, but would definitely wished I'd had it if I were to get separated from my paddle. The coiled leash doesn't get in the way at all !!!

I bought this paddle leash but I'm not really sure how to use it. I assume that the end with the foam and the snap goes around the paddle, but it does not seem to be snug on the paddle shaft. Is this right. Where is the best place to place the other end. I would think on the boat somewhere rather than the wrist? Just to review, this leash is not intended for whitewater. As a touring leash the padded portion of the strap goes around your wrist and the smaller loop around the waist of the paddle. In my opinion this is fine for flat water touring. When I lived in Hawaii I added another length of cord and tethered the leash to the front of my boat. In this way if I came off the boat in a surf landing all I had to do was hole onto the paddle and the boat would float straight with the current instead of being dragged sideways if I had tethered the leash at the cockpit. Hope this helps.

We attach one end to the paddle and the other end to the boat. Try attaching to the deck rigging. Don’t worry if its not snug, I actually prefer that it’s not snug as it will allow more movement with your paddle when using different strokes etc.VERIFIED BUYER

Right, the foam covered strap goes around the paddle. You have to fiddle
around a little to get it relatively tight.
I secure the other end on the fore deck of the boat- on the stretchy cord
decking- far enough away that the leash
doesn't get in the way of paddling- but not so far that if the paddle blew
out of my hands that I couldn't reach

It straps to the center of the paddle shaft and just floats some. On the other end, I like to secure to my vest versus my wrist and do sometimes secure to the boat. It just depends on the situation. As long as the paddle doesn't get away from you when you release it, I would just attach where it is comfortable and out of your way.

You are right, no instructions. I interpreted it the other way--padding around my wrist and the shorter length of velcro around the paddle shaft. I want the paddle attached to me if i get separated from the boat. There is actually a way to 'swim' with the paddle while in your life jacket while floating on your back--not something i want to try :)
but i think you can do it the other way too--attach the padded part to your nearest safety line, especially in calm water, you can let your paddle sit in the water with your hands free and not have the paddle drift away.
