A:
I put these in my Aire Lynx. They attach to the outer shell of the boat (in
between the inner air bladder and the outer shell). The kit comes with pretty
good instructions. But in summary - first, with the boat inflated, you mark the
position for the two holes on each side for the footbrace plates. Then, with the
boat deflated, use a hole-punch to make a nice clean hole in the shell. The
bolts go through an inner backing plate and there is a cover to protect the
inner bladder from abrasion on the bolt heads. It took me about an hour to
install them. Once installed, they are pretty bomber. An alternative is to make
your own footbraces, which you can do with mini-cell foam that you can strap in.
You can also find old inflatable Aire backrests (low ones) that you can strap in
to use as foot braces. The advantage of the mounted plastic ones is their
convenience. They are easily adjusted for different paddlers. The drawbacks to
them, in my opinion: you can whack your ankle on the plastic footpeg in heavy
whitewater (after doing this, I switched to ankle-high water booties), and they
make the boat a little bulkier when it is rolled up.
