  • NRS Urethane Kayak Foot Braces

    Q:

Is the rail removable? Can you take the rail out when storing your kayak? My kayak is stored in a duffel bag when not in use.

Rich, yes it is removable. The webbing sleeve on the round patch is open on both ends, so you just back up the rail and slide it off the boat.

The rectangular patch is a pocket and round patch has pass-thru on the black nylon, so if the distance between the two patches is maximized one could slide out the foot brace assembly. It would require the boat to be deflated, and you need to install the patches close enough to keep the foot brace assembly contained.
      Hopefully this is of assistance.

Yes, it is the rail slides out for storage. I usually take mine out so I
can roll the kayak more eadily.

    Q:

    Hi.

I have an Airis Play and the material is made from this...

    http://zebec.co.kr/english/accessories/Drop%20Stitch%20Fabric.htm

Would these footbraces glue to it? Also, you can't buy these footbraces in the UK so I'm wondering whether you ship to the UK, ie: United Kingdom?

    Look forward to your reply.

    Thanks.

I have no hands on experience with that material, but the D ring section of their web site decribes the material as being PVC.  I would assume, therefore, that a PVC adhesive would work.  The Clifton urethane adhesive that NRS sells is described on the NRS website as being for both PVC and urethane.  My guess is that you will be able to attach the footbraces to your boat with the Clifton adhesive.  That's the best advice I can offer.  You could perform a test with a small piece of urethane material on a spot on your boat that is not critical and could be patched if necessary.

The diagram is a bit confusing, but it appears to be some sort of thermoplastic, like urethane or PVC. In which case these Urethane Foot Braces should glue to it. I looked online to try and find more info, but didn't see any. Hate it when mfgs don't specify what their material is. Makes it hard to recommend repair materials. Yes, we can ship to UK; please contact our International Team at - inter@nrsweb.com - for help in ordering.

I can not be certain but I assume the adhesive would work fine on your boat. Worse case senerio is that you may have to buy the adhesive sold by your boats' manufacturer

  • NRS Urethane Kayak Foot Braces

    Q:

What is the history re stability and sturdiness of these foot pegs for the rascal? I like the idea of adjustability for the kids as they grow, but I'm concerned about the patch installation and the pegs being plastic. I'd love to hear your feedback on this. The alternative is the seat thwart in the bow, but how adjustable is this? How far apart are the self bailing holes?
    Thanks!

      Hi,
I really like the footpegs and found they are VERY sturdy! I ordered them
from NRS, but I had them installed by my local paddling store and they are
definitely solidly glued on and not going anywhere. I've been on several
paddle trips since I had them installed, and they make a huge difference in
terms of both comfort and stability!! I do recommend them, and think its a
shame they don't com standard on the Bandit and Rascal.
I cant respond to the question about bail holes on the Rascal, as I have
      the bandit.

Unfortunately I've not installed my footpegs yet. I also purchased the thigh straps as well and used those to brace my feet while paddling the Hiwasee River in TN. I would not recommend that usage of the thigh straps though since it would be very easy to get tangled in the straps should you capsize.

    Q:

Can this be installed on an A10 Ascend Kayak that is not an inflatable type?

      A:

The material of the Ascend appears to be high-density linear polyethylene, which is hard to glue to. However, with the proper pre-treatment, G/flex Epoxy 655 will work (see instructions on the product page - Item # 2272). For a bolt-on option, look at the Werner Footbraces, Item # WFB W.

I was unable to find out what plastic the Ascend kayaks are made from. I haven't specifically tried using the Clifton Urethane adhesive recommended for the foot braces with polyethylene kayaks, but I have tried 3M Urethane adhesive on a similar item; it gave way under light load.  I don't know of an adhesive that will work; this has also been the experience of my kayaking companions.  An option for intstalling the footbraces may be bolting them in place.  Confirm with NRS if those particular braces have mounting holes (they appear to in photos on the website) or if they have a version they sell for bolt in applications.  The hull thickness of the kayaks usually sold at sporting goods stores is typically thinner than that of whitewater kayaks, so if you go this route use fender washers on the outside of the hull.  I have mounted dozens of knee straps in whitewater kayaks using this method.  Use stainless steel fasteners and apply silicone
seal under the washer to fully seal the drilled holes.  Locate the braces so that you use them with the adjustable foot pad all the way forward or nearly so.  That will put the least inward bending load on the hull at the hole nearest the paddler.  If you find that the hull is too flexible, that the footpegs give too much by distorting the hull (which can lead to fatigue cracking), you can take them out and plug the holes with stainless or nylon bolts to keep the hull water tight.  I've plugged a lot of holes in that manner when remodeling kayaks with canoe outfitting; most hardware stores carry the necessary stainless and nylon fasteners.
