djust got off the Middle Fork of Salmon with low flows. The cargo platform performed as advertized and kept stuff off the bottom of the raft (not a self bailer) and damage to the floor was minimized

                            Q:

Do people use cargo platforms in self-bailers too? The product specs and reviews only seem to mention non-self-bailers. Thanks.

I used my cargo platform once on my self- bailer. I didn't like how
unstable and flimsy it was. After that trip I made a wooden platform that
works out so much better. Its a lot more sturdy and it's easier to pack
things on the flat surface unlike the net type.

It is good to keep the weight off of the floor in a self bailer as the boat will track much better,  I like to keep most of the weight directly on the frame, and towards the center to make the boat turn easier, but as we all know on an extended trip this is all but impossible so the cargo platform is essential in keeping the goods off the floor and the weight on the frame and tubes where it belongs....

                              A:

Usually if you're using dry bags to stow your gear, you won't have as
much need for cargo platforms. The self-bailing floor will drain, so
your gear won't sit in water for very long. In a non-self-bailing raft
water can accumulate on the floor. Either way, make sure your dry bags
                              aren't leaky.

I use a cargo platform in my self bailer because I don't have a rear dry
box. The cargo platform allows me to create an enclosed space to stack gear
in. If you have a rear dry box or cooler that fits nicely between your
tubes then you probably don't need a cargo platform.

Yes. The idea is to keep weight off the floor to minimize the chances of
damage to the floor; risks are equivalent for both types of floors. In a
self-bailer, the platform would keep the cargo out of the water as well.

A cargo platform is ideal for a self bailer. It will keep your gear up, and
out of any water splashing around on the floor. When your gear on the
platform gets sprayed, it will just drain right off and through the
platform, right down and through the floor.

I've used one in my self-bailer. Worked well. Just pay attention to the
amount of water in the boat and don't put the important stuff on the bottom
                              of your gear pile.

We use our Cargo Platform in our self bailing raft just to keep the gear a
little bit elevated off of the raft bottom...this protects is even further
from the water that does come in, and also protects the raft bottom from
                              the gear.

I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly do. I like that I can throw things like firepans, chairs, ammo cans, etc in the cargo area without worrying whether they will rub on that vital floor.

                            Q:

I need to buy 2 cargo platforms for someones rafts. I find it difficult to choose the right size since they shouldn't be too big. The rafts are 415 (13'7'') x 186cm, aqua design challenge 415, and 420 (13'9'') x 177cm, aqua design advantage 420.
I was thinking of buying an M + L. Can someone help me choose? Any recommendations?

Go to the product page - http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=1805&pdeptid=1055
Click on the Sizing tab. There you'll find the dimensions of all four sizes. There are also some general recommendations in the Specs tab. It's fine for the platform to be a little larger than the interior space; then you don't have gaps along the sides.
