This is one product that does exactly what it claims. I kayak all year round in the Atlantic and elsewhere. Can get awfully cold. I tried the little hats that have chin straps etc. but this is much better. My only problem is learning how to tuck the extra collar area inside the dry suit. The directions for use could be better but all in all this is absolute safety gear.

Comments about NRS Mystery Sea Hood:

Bought this for winter white water kayaking. Keeps my head warm in freezing temps. It is warmer than any other skull cap I have owned. Thought that the 1mm would be thin enough to fit in my current helmet. It was not. I now have seperate summer/winter helmets.

Great hood! I was worried my head might get too hot but after 3 or 4 paddles in 40 deg weather no problems. I can hardly tell its on other than my head being nice and warm.

I got this to use when white water kayaking in cold water (October thru April). I had an old liner but wanted one that covered my ears. This one fits under my helmet and is nice and warm. It is exactly what I wanted.

          • NRS Mystery Sea Hood

            Q:

Is this waterproof??? I would like to wear it swimming in the cold ocean; not kayaking. So, my head will be submersed in the water the whole time.

Not waterproof, but does keep me warm. I use it for scuba.

mine has small holes at each ear which lets water in, cold or otherwise, so i dont wear it in winter if i expect to be immersed.

Not really... it is a kayak or rafting helmet liner, so not designed to have a tight seal against your skin, but the best I've used for what it is designed for.
I hope you find what you need.

No it is not waterproof, it is like a wetsuit, water will get inside
and is flushing through everytime you move your head.

I don't remember if it has perforations in the ear area (to improve hearing) or not...I returned mine because I found the chin-strap uncomfortable..it triggered my gag-reflex when I snapped it closed, and no manner of adjustment could make me comfortable in it. For the record, I do seem to have a low-threshold gag reflex, so it might work for most regular folks. Good Luck.

No. Water will leak in around the edges, though it won't come through the fabric.

I purchased the Sea Hood specifically for ocean kayak rescue training.
Due to the fact that one is submersed I would not consider the Sea Hood to be waterproof.
However, the purpose of wearing it is to keep the head warm, and it does accomplish that.
              I hope this info helps.

It's not water proof, instead it's designed to keep your head warm when you get wet.

No, too thin. Not for continuous full immersion in cold water. If your head gets splashed then it might be just fine

No. It will keep your head warm but not dry. We use them surfing in Oregon and they work well with a wetsuit.
