This hat works good if you are looking for extreme splash-wear I believe, but it would not do a lot for full head immersion during rolls.
Cold water in your ears is a large player in cold shock, and because this hood have vented ears to assist with hearing, the cold water does immediately seep straight into your ears if you get immersed. I find 40 deg water really really cold.
I have concluded (due to the tightness) that if I want just splash wear protection, I could go with a bigger hat just to make it more comfortable. For me I find the hat is too tight for casual wearing on a cold day if it's not going to seal.

Wicked piece of gear. After a weekend of using this for kayaking in southern Canada over spring break I can definitely attest to the craftsmanship and comfort of this head piece. Each time I went for a swim in the barely above 0 degrees Celsius water I found myself warm and comfortable each time upon exiting the river. I use this mainly for kayaking and am extremely happy with my decision to purchase it.

For kayaking, this hood offers protection from cold water while not being too restrictive. It does not create strain on the jaw, a problem for most full hoods. It fits comfortably under a helmet. When worn with a drysuit, it helps keeps water from seeping through the neck line. A must for winter and early spring boating.

I wear a medium helmet, so I ordered a a medium, it was tight, so I returned it, got the large/ex-large, and it fit much better. I'm not sure how it would fit if you have a large head though...

Wow! I bought this years ago.....I tend to not use that that often since it doesn't get quite that cold here in Alabama (it was 75 degrees last weekend.....and it's January!).
I haven't used it in a while, but I believe the only issue is bunching-up of the hood where the latex gasket goes around the neck.

Hi Paul,
I've used the Mystery Hood for several years with my dry suit with its latex neck gasket, in winter and early spring. I've never put the neck gasket over the hood and I don't think I ever would. You will surely tear the neck gasket.
I've always put it over the outside of the neck gasket and it has been fine. Water never leaks into the neck gasket, which I think it would if the hood were inside the gasket, and the hood keeps my head nice and toasty. I'm bald, so believe me it's a good test.

sorry - have not pulled my dry suit neck gasket over the storm hood.
I find that my gasket is already too tight so would not want to do .
But I love the storm hood worn outside the drysuit. I paddle in very
cold water but am more conservative in the winter and wear my dry suit

I would wear it over the gasket after the top is on and then Velcro the collar of the dry top over it. You don't want to compromise your gasket.
