Comments about Padz Canoe Contoured Knee Pads:

I love the concept of these knee pads, and decided to try the contour ones instead of the straight ones. I found them to be rather uncomfortable, leaving slight bruises around my knees after three days of getting on and off them. I absolutely loved the straight ones but these looked so user friendly, appearing to offer more support. The first day they seemed great, but as I said after a few days of getting on and off them, my legs became very sensitive.

Poor self sticking adhesive failed 1st time canoe heated up while being transported on top of the truck. Will have to glue back in with better adhesive.

I attached these knee pads to a wild river rotomolded plastic canoe and
they have many miles on them and with heavy abuse and still stuck down
good. I would assume if they can stick to the plastic this good they would
                            have no problem with aluminum.

                            Colin,
I have a Kevlar and a Rolex canoes so I didn't try the on aluminum. In the past (long time ago I had an aluminum canoe and used an old Ensolite sleeping pad cut into squares and layered up to make knee pads and they stuck to the Al for years until I sold the boat. They will adhere to Al if you use glue made for use with aluminum. Contact cement would probably work best and I'm sure epoxy would work, too. When I got them, they didn't come with adhesive, so I had to buy that separately. I didn't order it from NRS, sometimes volatile/flammable/explosive materials can't be shipped so I just went to the local hardware store and to get the glue. I used a good (i.e. expensive, professional grade, waterproof) contact cement. It's been a while and no issues.
                            Good luck & good boating!
                            Cheers,
                            John

I purchased these to use on a Royalex canoe so I haven't tried them on aluminum, but they felt like they used a pretty general purpose adhesive that I would expect to stick on most any clean smooth surface. The adhesive felt sticky to the touch like a typical sticker and not the slick feeling of a plastic to plastic adhesive like pvc glue if that was your concern.

Yes. They have a sticky back.

Colin, yes they will stick to aluminum. Clean the surface thoroughly with a good solvent. Using a fine sandpaper to take the sheen off the aluminum will improve adhesion.

The adhesive is pretty sticky and worked ok on my Dagger Caper (Royalex) for 1 season. I replaced them with pads I could glue onto the boat when I changed the overall outfitting. Can't speak to how well they'll hold up over longer exposure to water and sun, but I didn't have any issues with them. My suggestion to get the most out of them is to prep the surface by cleaning it well, make sure it's dry and the material temperature isn't too cool - basic considerations you'd take with most adhesives.
