Screw Mounted Tie-Down Kit Q: Can this be used on a kevlar canoe with aluminum gunwales? If so, would you mount them on the gunwales or through the kevlar material? Asked on 5/8/2013 by Newcanoeowner from Colorado Know the answer? Answer this question 7 answers A: I would do the aluminum not the Kevlar. Also I would prefer glue in d rings over the product you selected. Hope this helps. Sent from my iPhone Answered on 5/10/2013 by Anonymous A: If you want to mount directly to the kevlar, I would recommend using rivets instead of the supplied screws. But I would try to mount them to the gunwales using either the screws or using rivets. Given the profile of the gunwales on my canoe, I attached wood strips that I screwed the hardware to. Answered on 5/9/2013 by Anonymous A: I think this could be use with your canoe just fine. However I don't think the screws are self tapping so you may need to use rivets or nuts and bolts to secure the tie downs. Answered on 5/9/2013 by Art from Colorado A: predrill holes with the perfect diameter drill so that the screws thread into the aluminum.... Answered on 5/9/2013 by Anonymous A: I suppose you could rivet them to the hull, but I wouldn't start drilling holes in my kevlar. I would use stainless sheet metal screws to mount them to the gunwales. Answered on 5/9/2013 by Anonymous A: I have a royalex canoe with aluminum gunwales. I am not sure about drilling Kevlar but I drilled mine into the bottom of of my gunwales and it works great. Answered on 5/8/2013 by Paddler from Alabama A: It depends on how handy you are and how much of an inner lip the gunwales give you. I'd mount them on the underside of the gunwales if possible. Aluminum isn't that hard to drill. Get out your drill, put an appropriate size bit in it and, without plugging it in, see if you can put the bit tip on a part of the underside of the gunwale. If the lip doesn't protrude into the canoe very much, you won't be able to do it. I do have a friend would instead put these on the part of the gunwale that faces the opposite gunwale. It looked a little funny, but worked. BTW, I'm assuming your gunwales are hollow and have room to absorb the sharp part of the screw. You want to be sure to drill a hole that is smaller in diameter than the screw. (Hope I'm not insulting your intelligence here--just want to make sure I've covered the bases.) I would not screw into Kevlar. It's not thick or strong enough for fasteners. Answered on 5/8/2013 by Anonymous
Screw Mounted Tie-Down Kit Q: I take it you don't need nuts or inside boat access? Just use screws with epoxy or silicone? Asked on 5/6/2013 by Isaac the pygmy builder from Lubec me Know the answer? Answer this question 4 answers A: The screws may work on plastic hulls, but on my fiberglass hull, I bought brass machine screws with nuts and washers. I did use silicone and did need behind the deck access. Terry Wyatt Answered on 5/6/2013 by Anonymous A: If the load is going to be light, such as light stuff on the deck, you should be ok. If there is any load you'd want a backing plate of treated plywood and possible through bolts. Answered on 5/6/2013 by Anonymous A: Correct. I drilled pilot holes first, then applied epoxy to the freshly drilled holes for it to soak into the grain and then installed the clips with screws the next day. Two years have passed and I have had no problems. Answered on 5/6/2013 by Anonymous
