This product was hard to adjust at first, but once you get it set the way you want, it's great! By the time the trip was over, my dog was waiting every morning to put on his vest. He seemed to like it, and it helped him be a more confident swimmer. My dog was less than a year old during this canoeing trip, and he fell out into a CII rapid. When he bailed, it was great to see that the vest never let his head go underwater, and with the easy-to-use handle, we were able to just pull him back into the canoe, no problem. Didn't affect his confidence one bit! The little pouch in the back is also great storage for a leash! Good product. Very pleased.

Good for small rivers. Might not have enough flotation in a big hole.

Comments about NRS Canine Flotation Device (CFD):

Best vest for my Rat Terrier. She does not mind and actually seams to like to wear it. Good floatation as she is not a water dog but a great fish hound that loves to be in the boat or hanging over the gunnel. Peace of mind for me in cold water or fast water, now we both are enjoy looking over the side when a fish is on. You can keep their leash in the pocket. Tried two other brands on was twice the price and she hated it and wouldn't move. This one is the best for my money.

Really good pfd- well constructed, good flotation, seems to be comfortable (she doesn't mind wearing it all day). The handle is very solid- can easily pull a 80 lb dog back into the boat. Not sure if it rides up when swimming since she never voluntarily goes in past her knees.

Great jacket for our pooch! The other full-chest jackets are too hot and uncomfortable for our dog's taste, and this design works perfectly. It provides enough buoyancy and allows her to swim without restrictions - plus she forgets it's even on her. Unlike other designs, she doesn't cower as I go to put it on her. Instead she gets excited about going out on the water.

How does one measure chest size on a dog?

I think I went by weight. My Cocker Spaniel weighs 30lbs so the 20-40lb jacket fits him well. I don't remember if I measured his chest bit if I did, I would just measure around his body right behind his front legs.
              Hope this helps,

              Hi,
When we got our PFD we paid more attention to the weight range, and now that
I go back and measure the chest, I'm glad we did!
We got a "medium" for our 45 lb Australian shepherd, and it fits fine, at a
fairly small end of the adjustment. Another person had a weight question,
and I took the PFD to work at the vet clinic and tried it on a number of
dogs-it fit up to a 90 lb Ridgeback, tho was then snug at the biggest
adjustment. There is a lot of adjustment in the strapping.
However, I just took a tape and measured our 45-lb dog's chest-a somewhat
arbitrary measurement. Going from the back of one shoulder, across his
chest to the back of the other shoulder, at a comfortable tension as I'd
expect the PFD to fit, he measures 20"-which per their measurements would
put him in a "small" size. If you go to the point of the ribcage/first
belly strap on their photo, then he is 22-23", which would still put him in
a "small" size. And given the adjustment range on the medium, I'm sure the
small would have fit him also. (He is not a water dog by temperament, and
will appreciate the extra flotation in the medium.)
Anyway, I think their chest measurement range may be generous (tho obviously
needs to account for various dog builds-i.e. our Aussie vs. a pit bull or
bulldog). However there is a lot of adjustment in the strapping.
              Hope this helps!

I think you measure the girth at the biggest part of your dogs chest (right behind the front legs and over the top of the back).  Our Germans Sheppard is 70lbs and we got a Large (30-37") and our dogs chest measured 33".  It's highly adjustable with the straps in case it's a bit too big, but you don't want it too large for the dog or it'll be sloppy and move around too much.  The weight recommendation on the NRS website is pretty good.

I used a sewing tape measure and measured around right where the forward
strap is in the photo with the black lab with the life jacket on the NRS web
site. Then I also used the weight range that was on the web site. Between
the two it showed just one life jacket that would work. When I got it I
just made the adjustments required to fit it correctly.

              Hi,
We bought a “medium” rated 40—60 # for our 45 # Australian Shepherd. (It was
a Christmas present so it’s been tried on but not used yet.) When I
adjusted it to fit him, I’d estimate we are within the first quarter of
adjustment—not the absolute smallest sizing possible, but fairly close to
it. There is about ¾ of the strapping left at each buckle to adjust it
bigger to fit a larger dog.
After fitting our dog, I’d get the medium for the pit bull, but the PFD will
probably be adjusted to about it’s largest size. It really seems “true to
size” based on our one-dog sample. I think it would be preferable, also, to
not have the extra flopping straps and perhaps loose fit of a “large” made
              as small as possible.
If you are not in a hurry, I can take our PFD to work (a vet clinic) and try
it on a 58# pit-bull-ish dog and report back!

Bill, your dog is right at the cusp between the Medium and Large. Dogs are like us humans; bodies all shapes and sizes. However, if it's fully grown, the Medium would probably be fine.

The size chart works well for labs and goldens. As far as large chested dogs like pits or mastiffs, I couldn't intelligently comment. I think it depends on the dog's build, probably. Labs carry weight kind of evenly over the length of their bodies, generally speaking, but some dogs are pretty chesty. One way of sizing might be to find a lab with a similar sized chest to your dog, and use that lab's weight in the chart as a proxy.

Hi, (this is an addendum to my reply yesterday.)
So I took the "medium" dog PFD to work today and had the opportunity to try
it on a number of potential boater-dogs. There is a lot of adjustability in
              this PFD.
It happily fits our 45 lb. Australian Shepherd, had extra capacity on the
straps on a 60 lb. German Shorthaired pointer, a 65lb Labradoodle (too much
hair to easily do the buckles . . .), and a 64 lb lab mix. The life jacket
fit, with straps fully extended, a 90 lb Ridgeback-but it was snug:
desirable to hoist the dog back into the boat via the PFD, but not the comfy
choice to run around in all day. Anyway, there is a lot of adjustability
and a lot of reserve capacity in the straps. There was obviously a lot of
variability in body-style and conformation of these dogs, but I think the
medium would be the choice for even a stocky 60 pounder.

I have a 45 pound pit bull mix and the medium fit him pretty well. The small was slightly too small and the medium was almost too big. It should work for your slightly bigger pitty.

Our dog is a 50 lb. Golden Retriever and we got him a size medium. It fits him exactly like the one in the picture. Our Golden is a bit smaller than most of the breed so the medium fits him great. I would check the chest size to see if you need to get a large.
