My 3 year old daughter was using the small boater PFD's that weren't designed for paddling, and even in a power boat she didn't like the lack of movement, the poor fits, and the poor ventilation. She was losing her interest in going paddling. I bought her this vest and now when I get up early to go on a paddle - she's downstairs with her life vest on before my coffee is ready. She insists on wearing it during breakfast, and then I make her take it off to change her PJ's for paddling clothes.
I think the biggest thing to her is that it is a paddling PFD like everone elses. The biggest things to me is it keeps her above water if she falls in, and she likes to wear it.

Comments about NRS Crew Youth & Child PFDs:

My three year old wears this canoing and swimming in the backcountry. She has more room in this around her throat than others and the construction looks really solid...I don't want to hesitate yarding her out of the water by a shoulder strap like I would on some boating store PFD's. It's well made but basic. I only wish it had a small pocket for her to stow a snack in, but I appreciate NRS trying to keep costs down and quality up. I anticipate it lasting through several hand me downs.

Got this PFD for my 8yr old son for his kayak and it's working great for him. Doesn't restrict his movement at all and fits him well. Great flotation in it too. I feel very comfortable with him in this PFD in whitewater.

I am looking for a life vest for my son (50-90 lbs) and need to verify that the NRS Crew Youth & Child PDF by NRS DOES have the leg strap.

                    A:

Kelly, only the Crew Child PFD has the leg strap. Our Big Water V Youth jacket, Item # 2152Y, has webbing loops for the NRS Leg Straps, Item # 2163, sold separately. Also, the Extrasport Youth PFD, Item # 2165, also has leg straps.

                  Q:

Will this vest keep a child's face out of the water if he gets knocked unconscious? I just want to confirm that if they go into the water that this PFD will not flip them face down in the water. My son is 3.5 years old, 37 pounds. thanks

If you are looking for a life jacket to keep their face out of the water if unconscious, you most likely need a PFD with a collar. Both of my boys wear these all summer, but they need to be 'awake' to keep their head afloat. I think you will find that with most life jackets (child or adult).
They are great 'everyday' PFDs. We take them everywhere.

I wouldn't trust it to not put them face down. I was under the impression it needed to be one of the infant kind with the neck flap to do that.

                    A:

Type III life jackets aren't designed to float an unconscious person face up. The Type II Extrasport Infant Jacket, Item # 2165, would be a better choice for that. While it won't guarantee face-up floating, the fact that all the foam flotation is in the front and head pillow offers better chance of that in calm water. Unfortunately, no life jacket is a substitute for close adult supervision in and around water.

No.  I wouldn't count on it.  We got 2 of these when our kids were 5 and 3.  The 5-year-old's legs were a lot longer and she naturally oriented upright in this vest.  The 3-year-old's legs were shorter so he had to actively orient himself until he was about 5.
