I owned two of these PFD's. The first on the Velcro on the pocket ripped out after about 10 uses from carrying my camera in it. It was replaced by the NRS Rock Solid Guarantee. The second one that I owned the same thing happened after a shorter time period and NRS refunded my money. I bought an Astral Tempo 200 which is much more durable but not as comfortable to wear.

Good for rec boats, not much else

Pros

  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Restricts Movement
  • Rides Up in Water

Best Uses

  • Paddling

Comments about NRS Vista PFD:

Good price point for recreational boaters. Good vest for rec boats without spray skirts. Has been durable over several seasons with many days on the water.

Not so hot for sea kayaks. Back of vest too long - interferes with skirt, especially for those planning to roll and really especially for lay back rolls. Makes engaging spray skirt very difficult when tow bag is deployed.
Pockets are poorly configured for radios and other essential gear.

If you re a serious sea kayaker look at another vest, leave this one to the rec boaters.

      Comments about NRS Vista PFD:

I bought two of these to replace my 13 year old twin boys' youth vista pfd's. They have started kayaking their own hard shells and need a bit more floatation for rough water swims. Although they are at the low end of the 90 lb weight recommendation the PFD adjustments allow for a snug, safe fit.

        Comments about NRS Vista PFD:

Purchased the vest for a float trip down the Green River in Utah, was required equipment. Found it to be comfortable in the kayak, also the canoe, was in temps in the low 110's. Was in no way cumbersome, felt good in the water, did not ride up at all, had plenty of range of motion. Didn't really use the pockets, but they seemed adequate enough.

I have a pretty large waist size. Either 48" or 50". Is the XXL going to fit me? Will the strap around the waist allow enough room?

The XXL size should accommodate a 50" waist just fine.

Canadian jackets need UL-Canada approval. Right now our jackets are UL-USA approved. A process is underway to combine the Canadian and US approval process. Hopefully that will be finished by this fall. But right now none of our jackets are Canadian Coast Guard approved.

There is approx. 14.5" from bottom of waist belt to top of jacket foam panels. If the seat on the IK is causing the ride up, check out the NRS Clearwater and cVest jackets; they have a mesh lower back.

6 foot 3 inches at 205 pounds. I often kayak in the Chesapeake bay and Pamlico sound with my Easky 17 kayak. This vest fits good. I have been using it for two years and it seems to be holding up just fine. I have tested the flotation in pools, lakes and the Chesapeake bay. I never have any ride up from this vest when sitting in the kayak or sitting down at all for that matter. But I will say I can not directly speak to experience using this vest with a aire ducky. But this vest is great bang for the buck.

                Hi Marti,
Like everything else this is made in China. It is very functional in that the shoulders and arms have more freedom of movement. I personally use the guide model as it has 22 lbs. of flotation compared to 17 lbs. for this model.
