Comments about NRS Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD:

Researched much for a vest to wear when paddling a kayak with high back seat. I heard this one came highly recommended. Vest back actually does fit well above seat so there is no interference. Comfortable all day and so far has not ridden up, stays put. I do like the pockets and storage. Loops and D-rings makes it easy to clip on tools or fancy gadgets. Easy on and easy off. Have not tested in the water or even gotten it wet so cannot comment on that. Good luck finding a better fit and price.

        Service and delivery comments:

Quick and prompt delivery, received as advertised. New in package with all tags on it. First NRS purchase, certainly won't be the last!

Lots of useful pockets, two on the front each hold a 6.5 x 4 x 1.25" fly box. Mesh on the lower back to keep you cool. Comes with a fishing tool retractor - I recommend buying a second one if you like to have two. The vest has a couple other spots to attach the retractor. The Chinook is a winner.

Per your sizing chart I need either an L/XXL or universal. None that size is ever offered. Is this a special order item? If so, how do I go about ordering one?

Ray, this jacket's largest size is the XXL - 42"-50" chest size. The NRS Big Water Guide has the L/XXL size. It's a very comfortable jacket.

                Q:

I like having the storage capabilities of a fishing PFD when paddling black water rivers and swamps. Since I'm paddling, I want to make sure that this jacket won't restrict movement when paddling with a normal stroke. Has anyone out there used this PFD for paddling a kayak?

Just used this vest for the first time kayak fishing in Baja. It is very comfortable; you pretty much forget that it's on until you look for your nippers, and there they are right next to the pocket with tippets, your forceps, small tackle box, and oh yeah your wearing a PDF.
The high back lets you lean back against the kayak seat without being forced forward. It allows for a great degree of arm freedom with no rubbing as you paddle. I trolled artificials behind the kayak for several hours and did not have any hot-spots from the vest. I'm extremely pleased with the freedom and versatility of the fit. The air temp was in the 80's and it did not cause me to overheat.
                  Strap one on.

I did try it on in the garage and it seemed to have good freedom of
movement....but I have not yet had it on the water.

I haven't used it yet, but bought it because it's one of the top rated
PFD's for kayak anglers. The high back design is optimal for fitting over
top of the high back seats on many fishing kayaks.
So I'm assuming it's good for paddling.

Yes, I use the Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD when kayak fishing. The rear floatation panel rides above a high backed kayak seat and the shape of he front panels allow for relatively unrestricted movement when paddling. The meshed lower back and cinch straps provide a secure fit while allowing all-day comfort in a kayak seat.

I have a Wilderness Systems Tsunami and the jacket works great without restricting movement. I bought this life jacket specifically for this kayak because the life jacket (NRS Vista) that I use for flat water canoe racing came too far down my back interfering with the kayak back rest. The Chinook has the floatation high on the back which makes it comfortable. I have a 52" chest and ordered the L/XXL (fits great).

I've got one, but haven't used it yet. I tried it on and it's going to
stick out there a ways with lure boxes in the pockets. It will work better
with a kayak paddle than with a canoe paddle. The back pad seems to ride
high enough to be above the average kayak seat. Should have plenty of
                  floatation.

Also, I have a 40" chest and wear a 4/3 wetsuit. Should I get the L/xl since the size range of the s/m will be little over the upper range? I'm assuming the difference in size is just the strap lengths?
