NRS Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD Q: Will this PFD be sufficient on whitewater rafting/kayaking trips? Thanks. Asked on 6/17/2013 by J Know the answer? Answer this question 6 answers A: We do not currently do any whitewater rafting or kayaking. We do sea kayaking and I can say that this vest is very similar to those we use for our sea kayaks so I would imagine that it would afford the same level of protection. A very nice feature that this vest has and our kayak vests don't have is the design of the back of the vest which allows more comfortable seating when dealing with a seat back. Answered on 6/18/2013 by Anonymous A: "Will this PFD be sufficient on whitewater rafting/kayaking trips? Should do fine. I have several pfd's rated for whitewater class IV and V. And this one is not that much lighter than those. Answered on 6/17/2013 by Anonymous A: In my opinion, this is a marginal whitewater life jacket as it doesn't cover much of the back. The rear floatation is high on the back leaving the lower half of your torso exposed if you have a nasty swim. The high back floatation is great for comfort when using a backrest in your kayak but you give up some protection. I have a NRS Vista that I use for white water and canoeing. Everything else about this life jacket is first class - comfort, quality and features. Answered on 6/17/2013 by Anonymous A: J, the Chinook is a Coast Guard certified Type III jacket, with their approval for "general boating and action sports." The 16.5 pounds of flotation is plenty for whitewater rafting and kayaking. Answered on 6/17/2013 by Clyde from NRS A: It should work. I've been using it for the last two weeks on local rivers with 6 times their average flow. You'll have to balance your body size/weight with the pfd floatation. It paddles OK, even with a 24oz bottle stuffed in the front pocket. Answered on 6/17/2013 by Anonymous A: I would think it would be fine as long as it fits properly. There are other vests that are designed specifically for whitewater, this one is designed for kayak fishing. Answered on 6/17/2013 by Anonymous
NRS Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD Q: Per your sizing chart I need either an L/XXL or universal. None that size is ever offered. Is this a special order item? If so, how do I go about ordering one? Thanks Asked on 5/19/2013 by Ray from New Braunfels TX Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: Ray, this jacket's largest size is the XXL - 42"-50" chest size. The NRS Big Water Guide has the L/XXL size. It's a very comfortable jacket. Answered on 5/19/2013 by Clyde from NRS
NRS Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD Q: I like having the storage capabilities of a fishing PFD when paddling black water rivers and swamps. Since I'm paddling, I want to make sure that this jacket won't restrict movement when paddling with a normal stroke. Has anyone out there used this PFD for paddling a kayak? Asked on 5/4/2013 by Tom from United States Know the answer? Answer this question 10 answers A: Just used this vest for the first time kayak fishing in Baja. It is very comfortable; you pretty much forget that it's on until you look for your nippers, and there they are right next to the pocket with tippets, your forceps, small tackle box, and oh yeah your wearing a PDF. The high back lets you lean back against the kayak seat without being forced forward. It allows for a great degree of arm freedom with no rubbing as you paddle. I trolled artificials behind the kayak for several hours and did not have any hot-spots from the vest. I'm extremely pleased with the freedom and versatility of the fit. The air temp was in the 80's and it did not cause me to overheat. Strap one on. Mark Answered on 5/19/2013 by Anonymous A: I have not used my PFD yet. I will use it in a canoe rather than a kayak. I did try it on in the garage and it seemed to have good freedom of movement....but I have not yet had it on the water. Answered on 5/6/2013 by Anonymous A: Only used it in an Outcast pontoon boat. A little bulky with oars but liked the features of the vest. Have not used in a kayak. Answered on 5/5/2013 by Anonymous A: I haven't used it yet, but bought it because it's one of the top rated PFD's for kayak anglers. The high back design is optimal for fitting over top of the high back seats on many fishing kayaks. So I'm assuming it's good for paddling. Answered on 5/5/2013 by Anonymous A: My NRS Fishing PFD is still on the back of a chair. Still waiting for ice off here. Answered on 5/4/2013 by Anonymous A: Hey, I am a big man. 6'2". 285#. This PFD works great. I have absolutely no issues when paddling and wearing this jacket. Sent from my iPhone Answered on 5/4/2013 by Anonymous A: Yes, I use the Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD when kayak fishing. The rear floatation panel rides above a high backed kayak seat and the shape of he front panels allow for relatively unrestricted movement when paddling. The meshed lower back and cinch straps provide a secure fit while allowing all-day comfort in a kayak seat. Dewayne; Tennesse Answered on 5/4/2013 by Anonymous A: I have a Wilderness Systems Tsunami and the jacket works great without restricting movement. I bought this life jacket specifically for this kayak because the life jacket (NRS Vista) that I use for flat water canoe racing came too far down my back interfering with the kayak back rest. The Chinook has the floatation high on the back which makes it comfortable. I have a 52" chest and ordered the L/XXL (fits great). Answered on 5/4/2013 by Anonymous A: I've got one, but haven't used it yet. I tried it on and it's going to stick out there a ways with lure boxes in the pockets. It will work better with a kayak paddle than with a canoe paddle. The back pad seems to ride high enough to be above the average kayak seat. Should have plenty of floatation. Answered on 5/4/2013 by Anonymous A: No restriction what so ever. It's an awesome pfd. I'm 300lbs an it fits me well. Answered on 5/4/2013 by Anonymous
NRS Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD Q: Do you have L/XXL? I have a 52-54 chest? Asked on 3/27/2013 by Doug from Parksville,BC,Canada Know the answer? Answer this question 5 answers A: I have the XX-L and I have a 52" chest. The Chinook fits good. Answered on 3/29/2013 by Anonymous A: I bought a L/XXL, I have a 46 chest. I had plenty of room and had to cinch it down to fit. Sent from my iPad Answered on 3/30/2013 by Anonymous A: xxl with a 49 inch chest. you would need xxx Answered on 3/27/2013 by Anonymous A: Yes, I just bought one for my brother. He says that it fits well. I have a large/extra large, the way they were designed they have plenty of of lee way to help the fit of the life vest. NRS Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD Q: Is the 2013 Chinook mesh back similar to the NRS Cvest, with the pockets the only difference? The back looks the same and the foam for both look the same. Thanks Asked on 1/19/2013 by fh from sf,ca Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: Yes, the two jackets are built on the same platform. The pockets and other features are the main differences. Answered on 1/21/2013 by Clyde from NRS
NRS Chinook Mesh Back Fishing PFD Q: I'm interested in this pfd for a high back kayak seat application. Is it available for purchase? Also, I have a 40" chest and wear a 4/3 wetsuit. Should I get the L/xl since the size range of the s/m will be little over the upper range? I'm assuming the difference in size is just the strap lengths? Thanks for the info. Asked on 1/14/2013 by FH Know the answer? Answer this question 1 answer A: We are just now receiving these life jackets. They should be ready for purchase in a couple of days. And yes, the difference in the sizes is the strap length. Sounds like you need the L/XL. Answered on 1/16/2013 by Clyde from NRS
