I wear this pfd when I take the kayak out. I kayak into the open ocean and I have capsized twice. The pfd keeps me afloat. This is simply life safety. The fact that I'm wearing this quality pfd also helps to keep my wife calm, when I'm gone for hours and she's at home waiting.

I need waterproof spaces for my camera and my cellphone. I can store these in the waterproof compartments in the kayak but then they are hard to reach. I need the camera instantly and don't want to struggle with a waterproof housing. It's impossible to evaluate the pockets from the photos in the catalogue. I thought the pockets of this pfd would provide more waterproofing than they do. I have to wrap things in plastic, before I put them in the pockets.

Comments about NRS Clearwater Mesh Back PFD:

Ordered the Clearwater to replace my previous PDF, which was bruising the inside of my upper arms while paddling. Love the design of the arm openings relative to chest flotation, which gives unrestictive range of motion.

The mesh back is cool and very comfortable even when I raise the seatback of my kayak.

Haven't had a swim yet, but I feel very confident about the fit of the Clearwater. Hate to admit it, but at age 60, developing more of the "apple" body shape and wearing a size L/EXL top, some PDFs I tried on would slide up and over my head when my husband gave them the 'pull up on the shoulder strap' test. The Clearwater adjusts so well that I can be comfortable and have a properly fitting lifejacket at the same time.

Most vest I had prior to owning this NRS vest were too long and bulky therefore they always rode up even when tightly adjusted. I like the net in the back and the floating pouch higher up that allows me to sit more comfortably in the kayak.

The Clearwater doesn't have a lash tab for a knife. The only practical way to attach a Co-Pilot to it would be to use zip ties to fasten the sheath to one of the shoulder straps. However, both the NRS cVest and Chinook life jackets are built on the same platform and have lash tabs.

Not sure what a co-pilot is but there are d-rings inside the flap of the two
front pockets. That's where I attach my rescue knife. I also run small
loops of para cord through each of the small black tabs visible on the
outside pocket flaps as other possible attachment points.

Charlotte, I carry a knife in one of the pockets. It fits well enough with

Charlotte, I would use a coiled, corded lanyard (similar to a phone cord)
attached to the tabs on the pocket and then store the knife in the pocket.

I am not sure with the co-pilot knife is but there is a nylon loop
where the top strap attaches to the floatation pad. I have attached a
carabiner to the loop and have attached misc. equipment to this ring
                    when needed.

                    Hi Amy,
I have 3 of these. One for my wife, son and me. I have mine adjusted so that it easily clears the back of my kayak seat as does the rest of the family. The pfd part of the back stops between the bottom of my shoulder blades and my ribs. Below that is the mesh panel, so 5/8's of it is pfd.
I tried multiple pfd's, probably went through 5 or 6 before I tried this one. This is the best all around pfd I ever used in my 51 years. Good zipper front, easy on and off, pockets for your cut away knife, safety whistle and signal mirror and more. Dries fast and HIGHLY adjustable. Sizing is accurate.
I don't work for NRS either! I'm just another recreational paddler.

The back covers the shoulder blades and the mesh reaches just above the
waist line. The PFD is very comfortable to wear and use and does not
conflict with the seat back of the kayaks.

It's about 50% of each. My husband wears it to kayak, and really likes it. He says the design allows for a lot of arm movement, and because of the mesh, it doesn't get as hot as most pfd's.
                    I hope this helps!
