Thickened G/flex® Epoxy Adhesive, 4.5 oz. tubes of resin and hardener, plus instructions and application supplies. Tough bond on many different materials. Waterproof, flexible, permanent.
  • Note: The packaging now refers to this product as Plastic Boat Repair Kit. Please be aware that this is still the same great adhesive that works on a wide range of materials.

  • The 655-K kit contains 4.5 oz. each of thickened G/flex 655 resin and hardener. Mixing ratio is 1:1. It also includes two reusable mixing sticks/applicators, one pair disposable gloves, four alcohol cleaning pads, 10 mixing palettes and complete handling and repair instructions.

  • Mixed G/flex 655 is of a "mayonnaise" consistency. It's still very spreadable, but stays put where it is applied.

  • G/flex is a product of West System, a division of Gougeon Brother's, Inc. The Gougeon brothers have been using epoxy resins in boat building and repair for some 50 years.

  • It makes structural bonds that can absorb the stresses of expansion, contraction, shock and vibration.

  • In addition to its superior bonding to many different materials and its ability to bond dissimilar materials, Cured G/flex is much more flexible than other epoxies. This is an excellent property for boat building and repair.

  • Polyethylene (HDPE) is a common kayak and canoe material. Its molecular structure resists gluing by most adhesives. G/flex solves the problem; it bonds well to polyethylene and ABS plastics.

  • At 72 degrees F pot life is 45 minutes. Working time is 75 minutes. It cures to a solid in three hours and cures to its full strength in one to two days. It cures faster in warmer temperatures and slower in colder ones.

  • Clean up is simple. Wipe up spills with absorbent materials. Clean residue before it cures, with alcohol or acetone.

  • G/flex adheres tenaciously to difficult-to-glue hardwoods, both tropical and domestic varieties.

  • It has the ability to glue damp woods. It can be used on wet surfaces, even underwater when applied with specific techniques.

  • G/flex does indeed belong in every boater's repair kit. The more you use it, the more uses you'll find for it - with your boating gear and other sporting and household items. It's easy to mix and use. The instructions that come with the kit are top notch.

Seems like a pretty good option for repairing a cracked boat IF you have access to the outside AND inside of the crack (ie cracks on the bow are gonna be hard to get to on the inside). The g/flex repair seems a lot more solid than a standard weld, especially when paired with a couple layer of bitchuthane tape. It does seem a bit stiff and brittle, and I'm sure it will crack again at some point...but for now, I'm impressed!

I first used this two seasons ago to repair an polyethylene plastic canoe that develop a crack directly beneath the seat. That repair has lasted over two seasons. It has gone through several temperature changes and the patch has scraped over innumerable rocks and has held. My buddy used the left over epoxy to seal his foam core kayak paddle. It's working like a charm.

Comments about G/flex Epoxy Adhesive Kit - 655-K:

I applied this to the inside and outside of my Pyranha after melting some plastic from Pyranha onto the crack by heating a putty knife from the back while pressing into the crack. I did follow all the directions about pre-sanding and heat glazing/preparing the surface and it looks like it stuck on there good! The extra product on the cardboard that dried seemed to have some flexibility to it, so I am pretty sure this will hold up fine to river usage and scrapes.

The stuff is a little on the expensive side, but if it works it will be worth every penny.

I used this to repair a large gash in the keel of a Tarpon kayak. It appeared to bond well and the kayak has been used since with no leaks. Time will tell how well it holds up but it looks like it should. I added a few pieces of fiberglass cloth for abraision resistance and the cloth wetted well with this product.

The repair was easy and took a few hours start to finish.

I'm sure I will find MANY uses for the remaining product.

G-Flex, sold as West System Plastic Boat Repair Kit is an outstanding product. Pretty easy to use, it comes with great, easy to follow directions. Easy to mix and apply, forms a very strong bond and seal. Used this on a 2005 Hobie where the peddle system caused stress cracks.

I used it to bond some aluminum angle to a plastic gunwale that had
buckled (I also bolt with machine screws). The canoe has been used
once since without any sign of failure. Same for use with fiberglass on
the bottom of another plastic canoe. Follow instructions carefully.

Yes, Kim, you can repair aluminum with G/flex. There's a link to instructions for patching a hole in an aluminum boat in this article - http://www.nrsweb.com/tech_talk/GflexEpoxy.asp - It's great stuff!

                    A:

G/flex bonds very well to many materials, including Hypalon and fiberglass. On the G/flex product page there are links to the instruction sheets, in the More Information block. As to it bonding to the gelcoat itself, it may depend on the composition of the gelcoat. Take a look at this online G/flex manual on Fiberglass Boat Repair - http://www.westsystem.com/ss/assets/HowTo-Publications/Fiberglass-Boat-Repair-and-Maintenance.pdf - for additional information.

Once this product dries, it has a light yellow appearance. The final color is more similar to what comes out of the red tube than the blue.
