These have been the best shoes for working in the surf while I metal detect. I have two pair so I rotate them every other day so they will dry out between uses. One pair have over a year on them the other about 7 months and both pair show very little wear. They are the only water shoes that I could find in a size that fit my big feet (size 15).

Have used these once for surfing. That isn't their intended purpose, so grain of salt and all that. Despite this, they're way better than going barefoot in ~50F water. The zipper makes them super easy on & off, but also lets water flow down into them. Arch strap is nice for keeping your foot in place. The toe box is a little roomy, so they do collect water and pump a bit. Still, at the end of a few hours of surfing, my feet were just chilly, not frozen / numb / painful, so I'm a fan! I think that they'd be great for paddling / portage etc.

These replaced a 15 year old (at least) pair of NRS water shoes and I look forward to them lasting at least as long as they have a sturdier sole. We train Newfoundland dogs for water rescue (life guard activites) and they have to be warm, strong enough to survive the dogs stepping on your feet as well as working on a wide variety of surfaces, rocks, mud, sand, etc. They stay on in 8" of mud/muck and have great traction on slippery rocks. These shoes Rock!!

I bought this shoe specifically for a north Maine woods canoe trip. We spent eight rainy days slogging through marshy areas, climbing over beaver dams, wading through trails with calf-high mud, and portaging around falls. The shoes were on a minimum of 16 hours a day. Great traction, warm, durable, and the strap across the instep is critical to keep the foot in place so you don't jam your toes into the front as you slide downhill. I would buy them again as they performed flawlessly.
Warning, they fit slightly loosely! I wear a size 8 1/2 US and the NRS size 8 was a perfect fit

Disagree, I find them to be a advantage. As a Open Boater swiming is always
a factor though do have a mindset of not to but when needed these boots
almost act as fins! With the solid foot/ toe protection it adds to your own
strength & just as I stepped off the James River RVA in some cold high
water, feet warm with the wet socks under. Simply a plus all around to the

Anything on you that doesn't assist in moving you through the water likely creates some drag however; the little bit of drag these booties create must be weighed against the protection they provide which, assumably is why you were wearing them in the first place...

I've certainly done my share of "swimming" on numerous whitewater canoe trips. These shoes are not remotely heavy or cumbersome in the water. With sufficient flex in the upper part of the shoe, the rubber sole almost performs similarly to a narrow flipper. The most valuable aspect of this model is the adequate thickness/cushion of the sole protecting from the lumpy walking conditions alongside the rivers, creeks, and lakes that I hope you find yourself.. Lesser models feel better than socks, but not like these.

These booties are the only river boots my whole family will buy. They offer
excellent ankle protection and support, reinforced toe, and keep your foot nice
n warm when its cold. They may be slightly heavier than others but it is a
complete non-issue. We are open boaters, so they are perfect for us in the boat
as well as walking in the river, portaging, or just adventuring on islands in

I have had the misfortune of being in that situation, and the booties
didn't weigh me down at all. I wear a pair of NRS Titanium wetsocks under
them, and so there is not really much of any room for water to "fill" and
add weight. I'm sure a little bit of water did sneak in the top, but it was
negligible and I didn't notice. I actually swam twice that day (late March
in Northern PA; it was quite cold). It wasn't my finest paddle!!
I also like the Attack Shoe (a bit lighter if you don't need such a heavy
sole). I take both on my trips.
