I was looking for a sock/shoe that was not too bulky. I paddle a whitewater play boat and the foot-room in the boat is tight. These relatively thin sock/shoes are comfortable, they appear durable (I have not had them long enough to wear out), are well constructed, are warm and they allow my feet to fit into the boat.
I wear a wide shoe, so I had to go up a size - from the recommended large to an extra large. I suggest if you have a wide foot, you will need to do the same.
The soles on these socks/shoes are thin, but they are surprisingly comfortable for hike into the river. However, they are not good for hiking on large stones/gravel for long distances, as the soles are not heavy enough for this purpose. They provide good traction on the wet rocks.
I believe that I will be happy with these socks/shoes over their service life. Another good product from NRS!

I wanted to use these socks for swimming after foot surgery. My foot size is a true size 8 (Asolo/Salomon/ColeHaan, etc.) I ordered the socks for a size 9 shoe to accommodate the foot swelling. The socks were too small even for the foot that had not been operated on. I then ordered the next size up (L) and they were gigantic. Despite the no-hassle return policy, it is a waste of time to order items that are so poorly sized.

I wanted to use these socks for swimming after foot surgery. My foot size is a true size 8 (Asolo/Salomon/ColeHaan, etc.) I ordered the socks for a size 9 shoe to accommodate the foot swelling. The socks were too small even for the foot that had not been operated on. I then ordered the next size up (L) and they were gigantic. Despite the no-hassle return policy, it is a waste of time to order items that are so poorly sized.
Service and delivery comments:
When I returned the size small socks, I asked for an exchange for the next size up (1 pair) and a pair of Desperado shoes. Instead, I got two pairs of Desperado socks. Also, the items were sent UPS when my original order had been UPSP. The latter took 3 days to arrive, but the UPS shipment took over a week. Before I returned the socks, I spoke with NRS about the sizing and was informed that someone would speak with me about the return when it was received. Seems like that would have been a good policy to follow.

Can't beat this for the price. Very comfortable, good tread. Not bulky so they don't get in the way in the cockpit. Dries out quickly.
The sizing does run small. The average size of all the shoes in my closet was 9.2, so I ordered a 10 and the fit is good. I'd recommend going a size up from what you typically wear.

I tried wearing them under my water shoes but no luck. The sole on the
sock is too thick to wear inside another shoe. Unless you are wearing them
in a winter boot like a Sorel. We have not tried them in the water yet but
will next week.

Mitch, this would not be a good choice to wear inside another shoe. The Expedition Sock, Item # 23411, is a very warm liner for shoes. The HydroCuff top will keep splash out, but if immersed above the top, water will enter. The SealSkinz Submerge Socks, Item # 23511, will block water entry, but are not very warm by themselves. The Boundary Shoe, Item # 2308, has a high top, 5 mm thick neoprene and has waterproof seams. I'd probably look for something else. Despite being called a sock, there is a tread of sorts on the bottom. It helps with traction though it's thin enough that the gravel in the parking lot is still uncomfortable. I think that tread would be too thick to fit comfortably into a shoe.
Also, I find that these do help with keeping my feet warm, but they are not ideal for keeping them dry. It's easy to get water past the draw cord at the top and the tread keeps them from draining. If I've gone for a swim, I often find that it's a good idea to take these off and drain the water out so that I'm not sloshing around.VERIFIED BUYER

I'd never thought of wearing them under anything. They work great for what I need; a thin layer of padding in a tight carbon bow. It would work if you oversize your outer shoe.

Yes, in my case it would. The shoe has bungee type strap around the ankle that can be adjusted to fit over a wetsuit. With bare ankles I kept the strap snug, so there would be enough room to let it out to accomodate a neoprene wetsuit.

I purchased two pairs of the Desperado Socks with HydroCuff, XL and XXL. I wear a size 10.5.
I purchased the XL to wear normally and the XXL to wear over my dry-suit that has feet embedded in the suit.
I have to agree with prior reviews that these boots run a little small.

I have never tried using mine as anything but the outermost layer. I can
think of nothing about the Sock that would prevent use with a swim fin. It
is pretty smooth on the top foot portion which is where I would expect
abrasion. Likely would need to change the fin size up at least one size.

I haven't tried that but would think they would OK. They are the thinnest sock/boot that I've been able to find. I wear them while sailing and started with the Desperado BOOT but found it was to bulky and hard to get under the hiking straps. I like the thin sole and flexibility of the sock, I think you'll like it and be able to use it.

I'd suspect it would be a bit tight. The upper is a layer of neoprene, which could probably be shoved into a swim fin, particularly if your foot is a bit small, so there's a bit of room. The lower in a relatively thin layer of rubber, but it is designed to give some protection against whatever you might step on in the parking lot or river. That might keep your foot from going into the fin as far as you'd like.
Also note that they retain water fairly well. I wear mine for kayaking. If I go for a swim, I usually need to pull each of them off my feet and turn them over to dump out the water when I get to shore. I'm not sure how that would work if swimming, but it seems like it might be inconvenient.
