Bottom line is I don't think these are ideal, but I haven't found an ideal water sock, just like I haven't found an ideal water shoe. Many work, but every one has drawbacks.
It's been a year since I've used these.I've only used them as primary socks, never with a liner. My recollection is the foot box is more loose fitting than a normal sock due since the material where your foot rests is less constrictive than a normal sock(fits the length of the foot but if you have small feet, may feel looser than ideal)They do lock around the calf fairly well. They're more comfortable than thicker neoprene socks imo, but if the water is above your calf, then water may leak in (Which goes counter to a key selling point, but perhaps its me always being in deep fast water with these)My use case was in a canyoneering environment with fast water and depth well over the top of sock. It kept debris out, but water did enter the sock at times which required draining or else you're walking around in a bit of water. I had some 15 mile days in these though. Also, the waterproof membrane can dislodge from the main sock layer, so put on and take of with care to lengthen lifespan.

I think it would be most closely related to shoe size, although since each
of these sock sizes covers a range of sizes it is hard to find a true fit.
Stretching over the calves shouldn't be a problem. I, too, have large
calves and was really pleased with the amount of stretch in these socks. I
wear a 7.5 or 8 women's shoe size and purchased these socks for a winter
raft trip in the Grand Canyon. Because it was winter I wanted to have some
flexibility for sock layering and decided to order a medium. I tried out a
few different set-ups: medium weight wool socks w/ the seal skinz socks w/
the expedition socks, two pair medium weight wool socks w/ the seal skinz,
etc. For the bulk of the trip I wore just one pair medium weight wool socks
with the seal skinz and was really happy. There was a little bit of extra
space in the toes and heel but not enough to be really bothersome. I also
wore chaco type sandals and they were just barely able to accommodate the
wool socks with the seal skinz. If I were to order these again for a summer
or warm weather trip and was not concerned with extra sock layering
ability, I'd probably go with a small. I don't know that I'll ever wear my
expedition socks now, these are way easier and provide better warmth.

It seems to me the sock sizing chart used by nrs is pretty accurate. I am a size 7.5 in womens and bought the medium socks, also intending to wear them over thicker socks. They did fit well, but were a bit tight on top of heavy wool socks. The set up was not as warm as I was hoping, although they did stay water tight with my dry pants. I would go a size up probably based on your comments.

Dale, It seems like the sizes are shoe sizes, and the sealskinz are
somewhat tight on the foot and I bet you'd be able to stretch them around
your calves, actually they probably keep water out better with a bigger
calf rather than someone with skinny chicken legs. And unlike some
neoprene socks I've worn, there isn't alot of extra material on the foot,
they feel more like regular socks. But heads up, they aren't really very
warm, I've been wearing neoprene socks over the sealskinz, and if you're
wearing dry pants, the ankle gasket of the pants won't let the sealskinz
keep out water.

RE: my 11 1/2 shoe size and the XL seal skinz sock: I should have
mentioned that I do NOT wear another sock with the seal skinz; they go on a
bare foot.

I wear a size 11 1/2 shoe and I bought the XL seal skinz sock. The fit is
great for me, which is neither especially tight nor too loose.

Not sure how to properly answer that so I will give you as much detail as
possible.
I got a pair of Large SealSkinz, my shoe size is 10.5, the socks fit
perfectly, I dont like them super tight, but I would not be ok if they were
even a tiny bit loose, they get less firm after first use but not really
looser. I dont wear anything under them.
Regarding the calves, my calves are a bit bigger than normal for my build,
at least i have heard comments on that. They feel great around my calves
just the perfect amount of snug, if your calves are really big they may get
to tight. Hope that was helpful

Dale, the NRS neoprene socks are sized XS-XXL. When you open the Sizing tab there's a chart converting those letter designations to shoe sizes. The SealSkinz socks fit like most fabric socks and are pretty true to size. How they will fit on your feet and calves just depends on your measurements. Give them a try; I think you'll like them.

Should work well. Just a bit more difficult than a normal tube sock but not
as difficult as a wetsuit or neoprene fishing booty. I wore mine with crocs
in Canada bluefin fishing and they kept my feet warm and dry. Have also
worn them with tennis shoes while sailing and had similar results.

These socks should work for what you are doing. Note: this sock is 11" high and the top is not sealed. The SealSkinz Submerge Sock is 15" high with a water seal at the top.

Our use has been primarily to stay dry - wear fishing sandals in a wet, rainy campSome effort to get them on but well worth the effort.

I have no problem taking them off or putting them on. It all depends on how tight they fit the foot. I have several of like items, and if they tend to fit loose they pull off real easy. You might want to wear a thin silk sock or like item underneath. I use a thin sock for skiing and find the neoprene socks slip off real easy. Very little friction between the flesh and the sock. With out the inner sock it can be a little grabby with a tight fitting sock.
