There are velcro closures at the ankles on the inside layer. I haven't had
to swim with them on yet, but just stepping in shallow water it kept most
of the water out. With being fully submerged, it wouldn't keep water out,
but would decrease the amount that came in, or at least delay the time of
water entry. If you want gaskets you will have to get a full dry suit. Or
maybe look at kayaking pants or a wet suit they may be more comfortable if
you plan to get wet often. I think these pants are a great option for the

Yes, some elastic and velcro for closure, BUT, these are not a dry suit, ie if you go swimming you will get wet. These are really "splash" pants, sheds most of the water but as you are splashing through class 4 nd 5 rapids with spash and waves going everywhere, it will repel most of the water hitting you in buckets, but some will seep in. We use them for rivers up here in Alaska, when the really cold water hits you you don't want it to soak in, so a good repelling garmet is nice and not as hot as a dry suit, which we have to use on some rivers and some occassions, and there is a difference..........you might need both!
