I guess I am unsure how this works. Is it as simple as a plastic box with a seat on it or is there something sophisticated about it that helps reduce odors, break down waste, makes it easy to empty and clean, etc? A:
First of all you will need a 20mm ammo can to put the "plastic box" into to carry from place to place. Poo gets really heavy. Second, you will need to purchase the toilet seat that attaches to the "plastic box". If you purchase the complete system it comes with the seat as well as a 3" diameter hose to dump the wastes. You use a garden hose attached to a water faucet which is attached to the "plastic box". The water forces the waste out of the 3" hose. This can be done at a RV dumping station. Some river takeout locations provide a free dumping station. As far as odors and break down of waste, it is the same as the old "groover" 20 mm ammo cans. However, this system is far easier than emptying and cleaning the old "groover" 20 mm ammo cans.

The system is really simple. The lids keep the odor down when not in use,
and the chemicals keep the odor down when in use. We usually clean them in a
SCAT machine (these are public facilities at river take-outs), but there is
also a way to hook it up to your toilet. To be honest, if you get the
chemicals right, it is not very disgustingŠ looks like blue oatmeal and
smells of urinal soap cakesŠ could be worse.VERIFIED BUYER

This is a wonderful sealable toilet container. The toilet lid snaps onto the back and keeps it pretty secure. It is better than a plastic box. I do not know what material it is but it is tough. It is hands down better than any other portable toilet if have seen or tried. It does not help break down odor but i add blue liquid or blue tablets for RV septic systems. I do not mess with the hoses the come with the package unit. I just open the lid and dump it in my toilet at home. It is a lot cheaper and easier than the aluminum version, but works just as well. Not to mentions it lighter and easier than the aluminium options. I use this for long car camping trip for a family of 6 and for rafting and canoeing trip. after 7 days it was about half full with two adults and 4 kids using it daily. What you see in the picture is just a liner. This liner is sized to
fit into an army rocket box which are usually available at rafting
shops and army surplus stores. Before you use it you should put
something into it to keep the smell down; clorox (liquid or powder),
the stuff they use for toilets in RV's, or my favorite, Groover Tamer
from www.grooverlabs.com (pricey, but works best, especially on a
longer trip). And there are seats that are made to fit that liner
exactly available on the NRS website. Pricier than what you could get
at the local hardware store, but is less tippy and less likely to
allow spills outside the liner. The liner should also come with caps
and hose that let you empty the thing at a standard RV dump site,
though you will need a short water hose to complete the system.

The ECO-Safe system collects and contains human waste. Some river sections have a clean out system called a "Scat Machine," that empties, rinses and sanitizes this type of toilet. This tank is usually carried in a 20 MM army surplus ammo box, aka "Rocket Box" and then there is a toilet seat that fits over the bigger opening. Most rivers that require that you pack out your waste have a dump station at or near the takeout. Directions for dumping and cleaning are provided at the dump stations.

To empty it take it to an rv dump atayion, attach a drain hose to the 3"
outlet, and a water hose to the other side, and blast away.

piece of cake. just drop it into a standard rocket box which doubles as a toilet stand and convenient watertight carry box. loads easily onto your raft or dory, and then invest into the seat that clips into place making it very stable unit to sit on while doing one's business. It's very helpful to keep as much water as you can in the box so the enzymes can better do their job and the emptying process is more thorough. We've used these on the Grand for the last 7 or 8 years and they work great.

You are correct . is a plastic rectangular box.
I use this on my float trips down the Deschutes river.
Spray the inside with Pam before the trip and then add some water with
deodorant chemicals.
Pinesol works as well as the chemicals you can pick up in most sportsman's
stores . or Wal-mart for that matter . look in the RV toilet section.
The Dechutes has a cleaning system at Heritage landing called a SCAT machine
that will clean out the ECO-safe toilet . or a bucket for that matter.
The ECO - Safe toilet system has it better over most other systems including
a bucket with a gamma seal lid in that it
1) Fits in a Rocket Ammo Box to protect it and help keep it from
tipping over from use. I have two rocket boxes . one for the tank and
another for the toilet lid that I put extra toilet paper, Pine-sol or other
deodorant in . handy wipes . gloves for handling the tank .. Etc.
2) The lids are very secure and easy to put on and off .. note you
really only need to remove the large center lid during the trip.
3) The system DOES also come with hose and instructions so you could
take it to a regular (not SCAT machine) waste Dump station and hook it up to
it (same sort of station you would take your RV to dump the waste). That
is what the "second" smaller lid or opening is for . to hook the cleaning
hose up to the tank for an RV dump station.
4) When I pack the toilet back up for the last ride out of the river .
I add more pine-sol to it and a bit more water . then as I head through the
rapids the agitation helps prepare it for a good clean at the SCAT station.
