      A Very Bright Light!

Purchased this light to help navigate while kayaking at night. The light works like a champ, is easy to use and is exceptionally bright.

I have taken the Navi light out about 3 or 4 times, kayaking in SF Bay. I was very excited about this light, and even got an inquisitive comment from a world famous kayaker who noticed it on my PFD!

Turns out, after an afternoon of practicing entry / re-entry's, and T-rescues and paddle float re-entries, I found some water in the light. The seal seemed tight, and this was the 2nd Navi I ordered from NRS. (The first one had a few LED lights that weren't working).

Overall, I am upset that this isn't working as well as it promises. If it was indeed waterproof, I would be happy. I wish Navi would import their Navi Sport light, but they don't.

If I ever needed to get rescued (God forbid!) I need to make sure 100% that this light is reliable.....unfortunately, it is not!

Very good design. Like others said, you can use the magnet to put this on top your kayaking hat and it lights up the highest point on your boat -- the top of your head, 360 degrees. Nice variety of settings. Great if you are out in busy water at night for motor boats to see you from a distance.

Comments about Navisafe Navi Light 360:

This light easily attaches to decks, hatch covers, deck bags, but best of all - your hat. A kayaker's hat is the tallest and most visible part of the boat/paddler. It is important to be seen by all without compromising your own night vision. Attach this light to the top of your hat and you are seen 360 degrees without the light actually shining in your own eyes.

Comments about Navisafe Navi Light 360:

I attached it to the halyard and use it as an anchor light. Requires jury rigging the straps. The magnet placed between the bimini, works well for cockpit illumination.
They need to rethink how the light can be attached other than to flat surfaces or kayak frames. Limited practical uses on a sailboat...although could be very useful. Consider adding in red diodes for cockpit use at night. It won't fit on a rail and the stainless prevents the magnet application

Is the magnetic backing plate strong enough to work through a composite deck or hatch cover?

In my opinion, this would be dictated by the thickness of your hatch cover. My wife and I have used our light on the hulls of our plastic SOT kayaks and the magnet is MORE than strong enough to hold the light securely.
I hope this is of some help.

Yes it is but since I do long races I made a plate out of an old cutting
board and set two bike brake pads on it and then bolted the mag. plate to
it. I secure it with a lanyard and then if I or someone hits it, it won't
fall of the boat. It is real easy to make and fast to set up. During the day
I take the lights off but leave the plate hooked on the boat that way I'm

Yes, I use it thru the composite deck of my kayak and it still feels strong. It's fine with water washing over the deck but I suspect it might come off in surf. You could use duct tape for extra security.

yes, on my Epic 18x, although I have found that the light in front of you is quite bright. It doesn't take a big knee bump to knock it loose from below, so keep the light tied to your bungees.
I tie the cord to the back side of my shoulder strap of my pfd and use the magnet to afix the light to the top of my cap. This not only gets the light high up and out of my eyes, it is also a beacon for a group and makes me look saintly, which is a paradigm shift.

It certainly is. I place the base under the deck on both my sea kayak (kevlar) and my racer (carbon) and once the light unit is placed above and the magnets are aligned it is extremely secure. These are very powerful magnets. They grip just as well through a Valley hatch cover.
They work so well I wouldn't consider affixing/screwing the base to my boats. A lanyard is included with the light for added security. ( I haven't needed it).

I have three kayaks, different results, though all will work. Swift Adirondack (Trylon) holds well through the deck or hatch cover. Cover is trylon or hard thin plastic. Perception Carolina 14 surprisingly holds very well through the deck. This is roto molded, I believe, that heavy duty plastic. Also has heavy hatch lids which magnets work but not a ton of hold. Kayak 3 is a P&H Cetus and magnets hold well through the deck (Trylon) and the hatch lids hold as well. I would have thought the Trylon kayak decks which are thinner than the rotomold would have provided better hold but the thicker rotomold holds like it's not there.
In all cases the kayaks can be shaken on my racks and the lights do not move.
              Hope this helps.

Maybe, but the bond will not be as strong. I tried that a few times, and it is not very solid. I gave up and mounted the magnetic plates to the kayak. The plates only require one small wood screw (included) to attach to the kayak, and the hole would be very small and easy to patch if you ever decided to remove the mounting plates.

on the bow of my Necky 17 and have the pole mounted near the stern with the

I think you would be pleasantly shocked at how strong the magnets are.  The only concern I would have is if your deck or hatch cover is significantly curved.  But, on a flat surface the Navisafe is not going anywhere.

The (neodymium) magnets are pretty strong but it depends on the thickness of the
              deck or hatch cover.
Why not epoxy the backing plate or otherwise attach it (foam adhesive tape, S/S
or brass screws, etc.) to the deck and simply put the light in place on the
attached backing plate. The light has magnets in it and so does the backing
plate. Make sure you align the assembly first so you epoxy the backing plate in
the correct orientation; the pod and plate magnetically attach to each other in
alignment. If you want the backing plate adhesive to be removable use a few dabs
of silicone adhesive, that usually peels off okay.
Buy a couple of magnets about the same size from K J Magnetics and try it out
              first..
