I bought this light to use on a river paddle race and have been very happy with it. As I was pulling into the finish line the Coastie said "Nice light, best one we've seen yet". I think that pretty much sums it up. It exceeds the lighting requirements of most States, is very waterproof, batteries last a long time and its easy to attach. Definitely worth the investment!

    Needs some design changes

This light has the potential to be great, except for a couple design flaws that really detract from its overall performance, and render many of its features useless.

    FLAWS: Read complete review

This light has the potential to be great, except for a couple design flaws that really detract from its overall performance, and render many of its features useless.

    FLAWS:
1.) A single screw is used to fasten the magnetic base to whatever surface the light will be mounted to. In other words, the base can spin 360 degrees. That's bad because this 3-way light is intended to be used in direction-specific applications. Case in point, the magnets in the base and light are "patterned" to help orient the light in the proper direction, but the single screw (which allows the base to spin) makes this ineffectual. The base should have TWO SCREWS so it doesn't turn.

2.) The direction-specific light fixture is permanently attached to its clear dome. This is bad because the dome assembly screws onto its mating piece (like screwing the lid onto a jar). However, the magnetic base is also direction specific with its "patterned" magnets. The result is that when the dome assembly is screwed to the correct tightness, the 3-way light may or may not be properly aligned as required for boating, etc.

The above problems really should have been weeded out before this product went on the market. These problems indicate a major shortcoming on the part of the designers. I'm not an engineer, yet I spotted all of the above issues within 15 minutes of unpacking the light when it arrived in the mail.

Here's how the device SHOULD have been crafted:
A.) Two screws to mount the magnetic base so it doesn't spin.
B.) The "patterned" magnets are great for proper directionality (but only if the base doesn't spin).
C.) The light fixture should be independent of both the clear dome, and the dome's mating piece.
D.) The light fixture should drop into a keyed slot in the bottom mating piece so it holds its direction and doesn't spin.
E.) The clear dome should screw onto its mating piece without causing the 3-way light to spin.

I was pretty perplexed and disappointed when I noticed how poorly this light was designed. I won't buy another until they make the above improvements. Fix the above problems, and I'll buy several.

My daughter requested this specific item for Christmas. She was very excited when she opened the package! I forwarded the email about the review to her so she may review the light as I have no knowledge of it.

The magnet won't hold on "through the hull"
The base would have to be screwed on, I don't want holes in my boat.

Once I was able to figure out how to insert batteries, it worked great. Then I had to figure out what part of the center button to push to turn it on. Other than that I wouldn't leave home with out it. Can be used in biking to or as anemergency light in just about any situation. Hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, etc.

Stephen, did you get it figured out? The black lower portion unscrews from the upper clear portion - counterclockwise motion - "righty tighty, lefty loosy." It is very tight and difficult to loosen.
