How durable is the material? I am pretty carful, but am going to Nepal and wondering if it can stand up to the airlines if it is my main gear bag.

It might make it, but I doubt it. I have the same problem as you; I use the bag for travels to South America and do not trust the baggage handlers. I solved the problem by putting my drag bag inside an old style military (you can get big ones from military surplus stores for around $15), cut slits in the duffel for the dry bag harness, treat the cut canvas with that rip stop glue that tailors use to stop frayed ends from spreading, pull the dry bag harness straps through the slits in the canvas bag, and voila-I have a fairly light, double walled bag that has a bomber outer layer, completely waterproof inner layer, and I can carry like a backpack. The last time I got back from South America the canvas bag looked like it had been through a war, but the dry bag was pristine and all my stuff was bone dry.

It's a good bag. Took it to cataract canyon out in Utah. I'd get it for your trip but for the airplane ride put it in another bag, just for added protection. Since it would really suck to show up in Nepal with a hole punched in your gear bag!
