The Tula Lifeguard Hat needs more daring company than lounge chairs and water wings. With a wide 5" brim providing 50+ UPF protection it may not save your life, but it will save your day on the water.
  • Handy nylon chinstrap lets you secure it on your head or wear it on your back when indoors.

  • The elastic Sizing Sweat Band enables the Lattice Gardener to be adjusted to fit perfectly to your head.

  • The lightweight palm material cleans easily, dries quickly and it even floats!

  • All Tula hats have been tested by California Polytechnic State University and were awarded the 50+ UPF rating, the highest possible for sun protective gear.

  • Reshaping is as simple as a water spritz and re-sizing as easy as a trip to the hardware store! Tula recommends cutting 3/4" poly foam water seal (at a hardware store near you) into 4-6" long strips and placing them behid the sweatband for a more secure fit.
  • Material:  Sustainable Palm Fiber
  • Chin Strap:  Nylon
  • Sweatband:  Cotton Foam

This is the best hat for providing complete coverage from the sun. I wear it daily on the farm and at farmers markets. Everyone stops me to ask where I got this hat. One time, at a big event, some people stopped me to ask about my hat and while I was saying "everyone asks me about it", two other people stopped to ask about it while I was standing there talking about it! Everyone loves the look of it, besides the fact it covers my face and the back of my neck completely. I think this is my third buy of this hat, I trade them out every 18 months or so, taking the old one to the farm and keeping the new one for markets.

I purchased this hat for a 17-day kayaking trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Before purchasing it, I spoke to the people at Tula to ask them if this was a good choice and if it would stand up to being wet. They said it would be great. Unfortunately, after just a couple days on the trip, it began to smell so bad that people near my boat would say, "Why does it smell like a barn over here?" I would say it smelled like a barn that had not been cleaned out for some time. By day 3 or 4 it was so bad that I crunched it up and crammed it into a garbage box that was about to be sealed up. My boat still smelled funny for a couple of days. Yeesh. I spoke to someone at Tula again when I returned and they were surprised to hear of my issues, but didn't offer me anything (and I didn't ask since I didn't have the hat to send back anymore.) I think this would be a good hat for sun protection if it wasn't going to get wet, but would not recommend it for the river.

      Comments about Tula Lifeguard Hat:

This hat is the best thing I did for myself this summer. I work as a landscaper, & spend downtime on the beach, or hiking. The hat looks great; I love the color & style, and the strap keeps it secure in the wind. I have a small head, so I needed to slip a little padding under the elastic brim liner, as recommended. I love having portable shade everywhere I go, & I get lots of compliments! Plus it's very well-made & sturdy. Love it!

        Service and delivery comments:

I was a little concerned when it arrived a bit crunched up in the box, but it flattened out nicely after I spritzed it with water and let it dry flat overnight.

Great hat, but not packable. Not in dry bags, luggage, or any other way. Wear it or tie it on.

the nature of this hat is the flat brim.... and it needs to be, either packed in a box that will allow it to lie flat, or be carefully packed in your standard-sized box with care taken to tilt it and support it so the brim doesn't crimp in shipping and look like Larry Storch from 'F Troop'....

The hat is relatively packable, but I wouldn't mash it down into a small wad for any time (try folding it once and putting it in the top of a backpack). The best case is to wear it or tie it onto your pack or dry bag. Great hat for sun protection, even if it doesn't fold up well. Hope this helps .

Mark, the crown is fairly stiff and formed, I won't consider it
roll-able for packing. But a great hat none the less! No yard work
                gets done without it

I have this and another of their models and no, it's not packable.
They are well made and have stood up to extended 8k' UV's in Colorado.
The chin lanyard is needed because of the brim size in even moderate
                winds.
The construction quality is very good. It would put up with moderate
moisture but rain would likely wilt it a bit.

Not by my definition of packable. It's woven straw, you can't pack it in a
sack and expect it to come out in the same shape.

                Hi Mark,
This hat is not packable in the sense that you don't want to fold it or it would damage it. However it is very tightly woven and very strong. During river trips, it withholds rain and mud and wet conditions, but I am always careful to keep its original shape.
If you take a suitcase, you can put it upside down and fill the head part with T-shirts, etc. this way it becomes packable without being damaged :)

Not really. I took mine on a three week paddling trip down the Grand Canyon and (carefully) stuffed it into my dry bag every day, the crown of the hat started to fray & the had became very deformed, with the brim sagging.
It was a great hat, it's just not packable.

They say that it can be reshaped with a spritz of water.  I haven't tried it, but i would think that would be applicable to the brim and not the crown.  Personally, I would only pack this hat if i could lay it flat in my suitcase with the crown stuffed and clothing etc packed around it.  I would not roll it.

                Hope this helps...
