After using every other kind of saddle, I have come back to this basic foam block. Nothing tricky or difficult to replace. It fits our round bars and allows us to carry our kayaks on their bottoms. Best for V bottom boats. A good 9 foot NRS strap to the cross bar and you are set to go.

I put these onto my Toyota 4runner, which already has crossbars. Just put them on the crossbars and now I can put my stand up paddleboard on and strap it on stably, without any worry of damaging the board. They would work great for a kayak too!

Q:
How high does the padding sit above the top of an aero rack, both in the middle and edges of the pads?
Also, is the material fairly smooth or does it grip the hull of your craft? I have a fairly heavy kayak that I load from the rear so I need it to slide over the pads.
Any help is appreciated.

I don't have an aero rack, I have a Yakima. It's a round pipe type. The ends of the pads are 1 &1/2 inches from the top of the hole to the top of the pad.
The center of the pad is 3/4" shorter than the edge. So. I would think 3/4"..
The material is smooth, similar to the closed cell sleeping pad. Doesn't slide real easy; but not too hard either.
You might look into a roller on the back.
You might be able to put a slippery substance on them to make it slide better.
I'm thinking bacon grease; becasue everything goes better with bacon. (joke)

Hi,
I don't use the insertion region on the foam. I simply place it between the two factory installed cross bars and then put the boat on top. It is just deep enough to soften the load on the bar and protect the kayak from damage. I am not tall 5'6'' and use my subaru impreza sport or my pontiac vibe. If its too high I would not be able to reach it.

At the center, the material is about an inch above rack height. At the
sides, it stick up closer to 2-3 inches. It is at least somewhat grippy,
so a kayak may or may not slide smoothly over/across it. You might be able
to put the kayak up on the rack, and then lift either end to put the foam

On the ends the foam is ~ 1 3/4" thick, less than that in the center. The flat side of the block has a grippy surface, the vee-shaped side is non-coated foam that is still a bit grippy, but not like the flat side.Answered on 4/19/2013 by Clyde from NRSVERIFIED BUYER

The pads are closed cell foam. Very smooth. I don't have the pads accessible right now for measurement. I'd say 3 1/2 to 4 inches.
