Comments about Quick-N-Easy Car Top Racks - Set:

The concept of this product is great, but implementation is a bit tricky. The width from gutter to gutter changes throughout the length of my van (a little wider in the middle). It's difficult to measure this due to the curvature of the roof. Best bet is probably to level the van, then use a square or level (plumb) to mark gutter width on the cross-memeber. But then you need to locate the mounting holes for the Q&E (inset from the gutter). I used those squeezy clamps to mock-up position. But it would be nice if there was a spec'd offset measurement, (from the foot position to the bolt center), that came with insturctions for the Q&E. It would make locating mounting holes a simple measurement rather than a complicated one. My experience is that the Q&E feet like to be pushed to the outer edge of the gutter; too far in and the clamp doesn't fit over the locking screw. Of course, too far out and you miss the gutter completely. So minor errors in this width measurement can make a difference. I say there needs to be some specs/measurements and installation tips in the instructions.

With some rack tower systems of similar caliper costing more than twice that of these guys, it's easy to see where these may be appealing. I put them on my Tacoma on my move to California from Colorado so I could have easy access to my bikes, and haul all my stuff underneath. I had four bikes on top. I also used galvanized steel conduit for the crossbeams. It worked great! I actually got around the non-locking con by purchasing a set of padlocks. These are exactly what they say they are and they work.

Good morning. I do not think these will work due to a lack of a rain gutter on the Prius. The whole clamping mechanism relies on a rain gutter. Good luck. Mike.

No. They must have the old fashioned style rain gutter (Where the roof is
seamed to the body). I use them on a 95 Dodge van.

You can attach 1" round bars by using the Quick-N-Easy Tube Holders, Item # 3210.3. Many users bolt a board like a 2x4 to the tops of a pair.

I opted for 2x4 cross members for a number of reasons: 1) low cost 2)
ease of installation 3) I can stand on them while loading boats on my
full size van (6 ft at roof) 4) littered with screw-eyes and many bungy
cords makes transport of every size craft (or even a mattress) easy.
I've had 12 kayaks on my roof, on edge. I stapled strips outdoor carpet
on top for added friction and boat protection. Brackets have a vertical
mounting hole, and 2x4 is thru-bolted, counter-sunk to hide bolt head
for boat protection. I painted the wood with a high quality gloss white
for easy cleaning. If you opt for a tubular metal bar (harder on boats,
more difficult for attachment points), you'll need the Quick-N-Easy tube
holders. Since the rack is so easy to remove, its only mounted when I'm
boating (noise and gas mileage). Check out the reviews on the NRS page
                        for more info.
Note on easy drilling: start with a 2x4 slightly longer than you need.
Clamp a pair of brackets on your gutter. Calculate your overhang. and
drill 1 hole. Don't ignore vehicle laws or the fact that you'll tend to
bang your head as you exit your car if overhang it too much (trust me on
this one)! Of course, with a 2x4 this is easy to remedy. Bolt the
bracket to the 2x4, clamp to gutter, bring free bracket to correct
position and mark from below. Drill, attach bracket and re-check
overhang length, and cut off extra length. Remove 2x4, paint, install
screw-eyes and mark 'front' or 'rear' as most vehicles have variable
widths and the racks won't be interchangeable. As a last measure, I
bought some aluminum channel stock (Home Depot}, U shaped, about 1/4" on
a side, and set four 4" pieces w/epoxy at the positions where my
brackets sit to protect my roof and gutter, sometimes I have a heavy
load! I also replaced the stock lock screw for the lever/clip with a
longer, stainless steel - on an old set of Q&E they got corroded - happy
                        boating!

On the top of the upright pieces is a flat area approximately 1.5 inches that has been machined flat. There is also a hole drilled through the center. I mounted 1" square tubing between them and used flat washers to get the height I needed. Since I use them to transport canoes I wrapped the cross bars with old mountain bike tires to provide grip so they don't slide as easily. I also mounted eyebolts at various places to provide tie down points for ropes or cinch straps. This rack system is very well made in my opinion and quite versatile. Once mounted they are rock solid. Hope this helped. Mike.

Hi LandRoverDiscovery, I mounted my Quick and Easy mounts to the rain gutter of my 1951 Chevy Surf Wagon and used 2 inch bamboo stalks on cross bars for a very functional retro island beach look.
I recommend you buy some galvanized 2 inch round stock from hardware store then just drill some holes at ends of bars and then bolt them to the mounts.

I used 1" Square steel tubing to bolt to the top. The top is flat with a hole in the center. This makes it easy to make them any width you need. If you could fashion a saddle to hold the pipe from rolling on the top the Pipe would work. I built the racks for a 1998 Dodge 12 passenger van with a true rain gutter. I have loaded it with approximately 4-5 hundred pounds of gear. I don't think they were near capacity. This is a solid product and I would recommend them.

In order for this type of rack to work you need a actual Rain gutter. Looking at the picture it looks like they have designed the rain gutter into the roof line. Good luck.

                      Q:

Can you recommend an artificial rain gutter to use to adapt this product to a Leer fiberglass canopy?

                      Thank you.

Any truck topper store will have a really cheap kit to add these brackets.

Yes. Look up camper shell gutter mounts. Thule makes them as do others. I have them bolted to roof of my suburban without gutters.

the Quick-n-easy canopy mounts have worked well for me the past 4 years- no leaks and no damage after carrying rowing frame + oars for thousands of miles

Can't tell... maybe with an Aluminum "L" (the kind of thing you would use to fix a fence)... You'd only have to get it the right angle (about 45deg) with a plier, then you cut it the right lenght and you fix it on the canopy with at least 2 bolts. Use marine silicone to get your holes rainproof... This way you would not have to get a full lenght gutter on your brand new Leer.... But this system would only be good for carrying a light weigh over the canopy... if you plan heavy duty carrying, you'll have to put some reinforcement over and around the box... so this is a very custom fit!!

Yes, a set of rain gutter mounts will work. Be sure to back them inside with a metal backing plate to help take the weight off the fiberglass. A canopy shop should be able to advise you.

These quick and easy work great but I did a double set of clips and used a 2x6. thus having a mega strong rack . So you put 2 clips on each side of each board , the rain gutter in you case will be on a camper so you will have to mount double the gutter adaptors and you will have to reinforce the back side of the mounts . Not only on the out side of the camper but also the in side . A 3"x 6" plate of alumium 1/4" thick will work great and you will have a bomber set of racks . I always over kill but I then never have any issues with my equipment
                        Good Luck

After giving it some thought, I would contact the manufacturer of the cap and ask if they have a retrofit kit to install rain gutters on one of their caps. Depending on where you live, if that doesn't work go to a local sheet metal Fabrication/ Welding Shop and ask if they could make something simple to attach them to the cap. Let them know the approximate load weight you want to carry so they can give you material that will hold up. Also, since this is a fiberglass canopy, the manufacturer may have certain areas on the cap that are better to attach to than others. Good luck.
