        Comments about Yakima Landing Pads:

These plus Control Towers converted my existing Yakima rack to fit a new car (2012 Hyundai Accent 5 door). Easy to install with a one bolt attachment. Covers are supplied to cover the Control Tower attachment point when the rack is removed.

            Comments about Yakima Landing Pads:

These comments are about Landing Pad 7, the bolt-on version. These landing pads are just what you need if you want to have a permanent attachment for your racks that does not risk scuffing your paint and door seals. Due to liability issues, Yakima is not willing to give you guidance on installation locations on specific cars and you have to decide for yourself how much curvature is acceptable. If you install these on a curved surface they will bend to match, but the more you bend them the harder it is to engage the tower locking pins. Also, the covers that are included for use when the rack is not installed will be loose because you are spreading the receiving sockets. I sanded the underside somewhat so that they would match the roof curvature a little better, but still had to use tape on the cover tabs so they would not rattle. If you have a flat surface you will have no problems. Be prepared for some drama when you drill that first hole in the roof when you can't be sure what is under there.

There are 2 types of landing pads Heidi, one that bolts through the roof of
your vehicle and the other that rests on the roof and clips on to a rain
gutter or if there is no rain gutter it clips to the top of the door frame.
Most people don't want to drill holes in the roof of the car or truck cab
and select the clip on "Q-clips". However these most likely won't work on a
truck cap, one that fits over the truck bed, and there it's not hard to bolt
on a pair of bolt on ones, I have this combination on my Ford Ranger, bolt
on the rear cap with 2 mounting pads, and clip on on the truck cab in front,
this permits me to spread out the 2 rack bars for 2 18' kayaks. You will
need 2 pads for each bar. Now comes the hard part, Q-clips are different for
every make and year of vehicle so you need this info to look up which one
will work on your vehicle, all of the mounts that bolt through are alike as
far as I remember. Your best bet is to go to the Yakima home page and see
their tables to find which one matches up to your vehicle, this site also
explains all of what I have told you and maybe more.
                  Good luck

I really can't remember where I found this information, but I do remember
that it was a real pain to find. I suspect Yakima wants you to get your
rack installed at a dealer. If you Google your car and "landing pad"
+Yakima you should find which version fits your car. You are really on your
own with this product; no-one will tell you where to drill or what you might
drill in to. I spent a lot of time deciding where to drill and then the
holes for the back position hit a roof beam. It was too close for the
provided nut clips to work; I ended up bending the roof beams slightly to
resolve the problem. No regrets, but it is a bit scary when you start to
drill. If you do install some of these, bear in mind that the curvature of
the roof where you decide to mount them has a big affect on the actuation of
the tower cams. I ground some off the bottom of my landing pads to better
match the curvature; otherwise the cam could not engage the tower; too
                  tight.
