Would this work for rowing? Is it a newer product than the Ninja?

I am using it for whitewater, I see no reason why it would not work for rowing!
It fits great and you have lots of arm room.

I would say this would be a much better PFD than the Ninja for rowing although I've not seen the Ninja first hand it looks like a much heavier PFD.  Short of going to an inflatable PFD, which some waterways don't allow, it's the lightest weight, least restrictive PFD I've ever seen.  I use it for everything from paddling a surf ski to whitewater kayaking.  This PFD reminds me of the old Lotus Low Rider except it's lighter, more comfortable, and has pockets the perfect size for a digital camera.  I like the integrated foam on the front moreso than the Astral Willis which might be another option worth looking at.

Poppy, the YTV is new this year. It is a low-profile jacket with generous arm holes that give great mobility. It will be excellent for rowing. It is an Astral product. The Ninja is an NRS life jacket.

    Q:

what is the thickness of the foam in the chest panel, i have been looking for a low profile vest for riverboarding for years but it is incredibly difficult to find one that isnt too thick and cumbersome.

      A:

The front chest panel is 3" thick. Most life jacket makers, including NRS, describe a jacket as "low profile" when the foam panels are shorter, top to bottom, so they don't occupy a lot of the torso area. Type III jackets have to have a minimum of 15.5 pounds of flotation, the foam has to go somewhere and the panels on low profile models tend to be thicker. A "medium profile" jacket will have the foam spread out more and the panels will likely be thinner.

I probably wouldn't recommend this jacket for riverboarding.  While the foam in the front panel is more integrated than a jacket like the Willis it still has a very thick belt section (almost 3") and there is a hard edge in the foam in the top portion of the front panel that is only 1".  I was somewhat disappointed in that the foam in the front panel wasn't more smoothly contoured from top to bottom.  That would have made the jacket far more comfortable and possibly more suitable for your purposes.  All in all it's still an improvement in weight and movement over most jackets on the market.  The the hard edge in the foam in the front panel was really my only complaint.
