Comments about Brunton 58 Kayak Compass: After considering a mountable compass (that looks awesome), I decided on this one that was much more cost effective and the idea of removing it easily and quickly to prevent accidental damage, has proven the better choice for me. The Bruton 58 is a top quality, aestetically pleasing compass that you would find in much more expensive models.

Comments about Brunton 58 Kayak Compass: I hard-mounted two of these 58's to the deck hatches in my sit-on-top tandem sailing sea kayak by disassembling each housing (2 screws), removing the bungee straps & neoprene pad, bolting each housing directly to the kayak with brass screws, washers, & nuts, and then reassembling each housing (2 screws). That way, both persons in the kayak have their own compass to monitor, and one compass backs up the other. In my usage, I have found the following: the Brunton 58 is very accurate, both give the exact same reading, they can handle lots of heavy wave activity on the open sea/Gulf of Mexico, and they look great mounted to my boat! In addition to the two that I have hard-mounted on my sea kayak, I have a third 58 that I use with my inflatable tandem kayak; for this I use the bungee straps provided with the compass and simply strap it to the deck rigging.
